  1. Michael - You probably don't remember me but I am a friend of your Mother's who lives in Bountiful, Utah. When you were young I came to visit your family when you lived in France. I went to Spain on my mission and I testify that what you experienced in Spain really happens. It's called the "Gift of Tongues." It manifests itself in different ways. For Elders and Sisters who serve the Lord in different countries, they are blessed to learn the language. Others, like you, are blessed to speak to people in different languages and they understand you. We had "couple missionaries" in some of the areas I served in. One couple was from Ogden Utah - the Smiths. Elder Smith taught Spanish in Ogden High School, but his wife did not know Spanish. She loved the Sisters of the Oviedo Branch and one in particular who she desperately wanted to communicate with. She tried so hard to learn Spanish but could only utter a few words correctly. We would translate for both of them when we could. Sister Smith started to fast and pray and work hard at learning the language. Soon she told her husband it was no use. Elder Smith then gave her a blessing that through her faith and persistence in learning the language, "she would be blessed to communicate with the sisters in the branch." That next Sunday when my companion and I entered into the chapel, here was Sister Smith speaking to her Spanish Friend!! We were shocked -- not because they were talking to one another, but Sister Smith was talking in English and Sister Ramos was talking in Spanish yet they understood what each other were saying as if they were talking the same language!! It was interesting to me that Elder Smith's words used in the blessing were not that his wife would learn the language, but that she would be able to "communicate with the sisters in the branch." How wonderful it is that when we serve the Lord he makes things possible for us that would otherwise be impossible.

Enjoy your time in the Mission. It is the MTC, or Training Center, for everything you will do for the rest of your life.
